The NIPSS Senior Executive Course 47 (SEC 47) research frames the Blue Economy as a convergence point between economic ambition and environmental responsibility. The study stresses that sustainable development within Nigeria’s maritime domain must balance resource utilisation with ecosystem preservation.
SEC 47 highlights environmental threats facing Nigeria’s coastal and marine ecosystems, including pollution, overfishing, climate-induced coastal erosion, and weak enforcement of environmental standards. The research warns that neglecting these challenges could undermine livelihoods, biodiversity, and Nigeria’s international environmental commitments.
The study identifies opportunities for sustainable marine resource management, green maritime technologies, climate-resilient infrastructure, and policy alignment with global sustainability frameworks. According to SEC 47, embedding environmental stewardship into Blue Economy strategies will enhance Nigeria’s global competitiveness, attract responsible investment, and secure long-term socio-economic benefits.
