The Anambra State Police Command says its investigation into the assault of NYSC member Jennifer Elobor by members of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group has been slowed because the victim is yet to come forward.

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga made this known on Tuesday after a video of the incident went viral, sparking outrage across the country. The footage showed armed vigilantes storming a corps members’ lodge in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, accusing Elobor and her colleagues of internet fraud. Despite presenting valid NYSC identification, she was beaten, her clothes were torn, and she was stripped naked as others pleaded on her behalf.

The video, first shared by The Haven360 Foundation, quickly circulated online and drew widespread condemnation. The state government later confirmed that the vigilantes involved had been arrested and detained.

Ikenga explained that although the suspects had been identified and taken into custody, the absence of the victim had delayed further investigation. He reassured corps members serving in Anambra that the police remain committed to their safety and encouraged them to report any cases of intimidation or abuse.

The Command also cautioned vigilante and community security outfits against harassment or brutality, warning that such actions would not be tolerated under the law.
